First Nations representatives from Treaty 6, 7 & 8 and the First Nations Inuit Health Branch, Health Canada are working together to create awareness and address prescription drug abuse issues in Alberta. The Alberta Region Drug Utilization Prevention and Promotion (DUPP) Working Group was created in 2004 under the direction of the Mental Health and Addictions Sub-Committee of Co-Management to provide recommendations on policies and strategies to further prevent and address prescription drug misuse/abuse among the First Nations in Alberta. Alberta Region is one of three regions in Canada who receive Health Canada funding to address prescription drug misuse.
During the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 fiscal years the DUPP Working Group worked with the University of Calgary to engage 5 First Nation communities in Alberta and facilitate a community education session in each community. The community education session was developed jointly by the University of Calgary and a Wisdom Council comprised of representatives from the 5 First Nation Communities including youth, Elders and community workers; the DUPP Working Group; RCMP; Alberta Health Services; the College of Physicians and Surgeons; and the Alberta College of Pharmacists.
The DUPP Working Group engaged consultant Sue Howard in 2014 to develop a Prescription Drug Misuse Strategy for Alberta Region as well as implementation plans for each of Treaty 6, 7 and 8.
The documents in this section are the result of that strategy.
